That drive took the rest of the day. The cattle were tired from being pushed all night, and Hallam knew that they should have rested the animals before starting them back to the ranch. He was sure that Lindsey and Rae were worried about them, though, and Armstrong agreed. By the time they reached the Flying L in the early evening, cattle, horses, and men were all bone-weary.
Wayne Lindsey and his daughter heard them coming and were waiting on the porch of the ranch house. Rae ran out to meet them as the riders turned their mounts in at the open corral. "What happened?" she called out. "Is everyone all right?"
"We're fine, Miss Rae," Armstrong replied. "We got the cattle back, but the men who took 'em got away. Sorry."
"Sorry?" Rae echoed incredulously. "You recovered a hundred head of stock, Dan. You don't have anything to be sorry about. But Dad and I were so worried about... all of you.
Hallam saw her eyes searching among them in the gathering dusk and had a good idea who she was looking for. Eliot Tremaine was riding on the other side of him. Hallam said to him, "I'll take care of your horse, Eliot. You get on inside and take it easy. Maybe Miss Lindsey will have some salve or something she can put on that bruise of yours. There's some cuts and scratches on your hands that need cleanin', too."
"Thanks, Hallam," Eliot said tiredly as he slid down from the saddle.
Hallam dismounted and took the reins from him.
"Eliot!" Rae cried, spotting him then. Someone lit a lamp inside the barn, and the yellow glow that spilled out showed Eliot's battered appearance plainly. Rae hurried toward him.
Eliot started toward her, then paused and looked back at Hallam. "Tell me the truth," he said to the big man. "Did I do all right?"
Hallam didn't hesitate. He nodded and said, "You did fine."
Tired and bunged up or not, a grin stretched across Eliot Tremaine's face as he went to meet Rae. She came into his arms and lifted a hand to his face. "My God," she breathed, "are you all right?"
Eliot glanced back at Hallam. "I'm fine," he said, his voice stronger now. "I'm just fine."
